What is a metal detector?

A metal detector is an electronic device that detects the existence of metal nearby. These devices are mostly used to find metal objects hidden underground or metal additions concealed within objects. They usually include a handheld component with a sensor probe that can be swept above the objects or the ground. if the sensor detects a metal piece, it will offer an audible tone or the needle in the indicator will deflect. Usually, the closer the metal is, the tone is higher or the needle will deflect more. There are the motionless walk-through metal detectors, as well, which are mostly used for safety screening at the entrance points in courthouses, prisons, and airports to detect the hidden metal weapons on the body of an individual.

Types of metal detectors

Metal detectors are of different types and they have been in the use for many years, according to the nature of tasks. Some of the most common types of detectors include;

Beat frequency oscillator detector: This is the basic model metal detector and it is often used in electronics shops. It has the skill to locate objects positioned about two feet beneath the ground. All of these devices are designed with a copper coil wound around an iron or a steel ring. These detectors include one big ring, which is attached to the foot of the detector. Additionally, it includes another small ring, which is attached a little higher. Both coils are attached to oscillators, which can produce a frequency.

Low-frequency metal detectors: This is one among the most commonly used metal detectors currently, particularly by experienced treasure hunters, as it is considered highly sensitive and accurate. It comes equipped with a pair of coils, such that the first coil will work as a transmitter, typically giving off a powerful electric current. The second coil will work as a receiver, which picks the signal from the major coil and amplifies the signal several times over. The attractiveness of this type of detector is that each of the metal objects will produce a different frequency.

Pulse generation metal detectors: This is one among the latest models of metal detectors, which is used to detect metallic objects. This device is mostly used by guards to detect the hidden weapons at safety checkpoints. However, the technology of this detector type, which is based on the theory of echolocation, is not extremely efficient in distinguishing the dissimilar types of metals. Unlike other metal detectors that work with two matching coils, the pulse generation metal detector usually counts on one coil or many coils to detect a metal object.

lndustrialized metal detectors: This type of metal detector is often used offering the necessary protection to the user, but it cannot be used to detect treasure. The most widespread industrial detector is the door frame model, which is mostly used in secure buildings and airports. It works on the principles of electromagnetism and it is extremely efficient in preventing criminals from entering a building with hidden weapons.
